If we think about technology through nixtamalization, what will we make?

"Si pensamos en la tecnología a través de la nixtamalización, ¿qué haremos?"

In June of 2021, the Techno-Tamaladas held a workshop with 16 youth at MACLA’s Teen Tech Center, as part of the MACLA’s Cultura Power Fellowship. Artist Praba Pilar began the workshop asking what everyone’s favorite gadgets, softwares and platforms were, and what everyone’s favorite Indigenous technologies were. Three of the youth identified favorite Indigenous technologies: 1 spoke about fire management; 1 spoke about water management; and 1 spoke about weaving and textiles.

Over the two hours, Praba Pilar explained and led dialogue on histories and cosmologies of maíz, tamales & the nixtamalization process, asking participants “If we think about technology through nixtamalization, what will we make?” She also shared practical tips on how to reduce the ecological impact of electronics systems, and inspiring projects that offer technologies of life.

En junio de 2021, las Tecno-Tamaladas realizaron un taller con 16 jóvenes en el Teen Tech Center de MACLA, como parte de la beca Cultura Power Fellowship. La artista Praba Pilar comenzó el taller preguntando cuáles eran los aparatos, programas y plataformas favoritas, y cuáles eran las tecnologías indígenas favoritas. Tres jóvenes identificaron sus tecnologías indígenas favoritas: 1 habló sobre el manejo del fuego; 1 habló sobre el manejo del agua; y 1 habló sobre tejido y textiles.

Durante las dos horas, Praba Pilar explicó y dirigió un diálogo sobre historias y cosmologías del maíz, los tamales y el proceso de nixtamalización, preguntando a los participantes "Si pensamos en la tecnología a través de la nixtamalización, ¿qué haremos?" También compartió consejos prácticos sobre cómo reducir el impacto ecológico de los sistemas electrónicos, y proyectos inspiradores que ofrecen tecnologías de la vida.
